Chemical Peels
Chemical peels, (technically also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling), is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures in the world. It is performed through some chemical solutions to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing its damaged outer layers. This freshens the skin, removes some sunspots and rough flaking patches, and reduces freckles and lopsided pigmentation to improve the skin's appearance. The procedure treats wrinkles caused by sun harm and scarring, as well as age and heredity. Most generally chemical peels are performed for cosmetic reasons to improve appearance and self-confidence and are performed in coincidence with a facelift. Most people are desirous to reduce the signs of ageing, scars or blemishes as it hampers the overall appearance of men or women that makes them worry and embarrassing. Mild scarring and certain types of acne can also be treated through the chemical peels. Chemical peels treatment involves the removal of the external layers of skin on the face so that younger, smoother and natural layers below are revealed.
The available substances used for chemical peels treatment are 'alpha hydroxyl peel' (the mildest available), 'phenol peels', which go much deeper and can last up to 20 years with often dramatic results. Generally, only single dose is used, which is sufficient to remove pigmentations in the skin and even pre-cancerous growths. 'Trichloroacetic peels' are less harsh in concentrations of fewer than 35 percent, but require pretreatment with AHA or retin-A creams. The solutions being used in this chemical peel are phenol, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and alphahydroxil acids (AHA).
Chemical peels procedure begins with doctor's observance. Initially the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that takes out excess oils and the eyes and hair are protected. One or more chemical solutions, such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid or carbolic acid (phenol), are applied to small areas on the skin.
General anesthesia is used in some chemical peels treatment whereas some chemical peels treatment does not require any anesthesia. The recuperation time depends on the kind of peel you've had. It may take 1-2 weeks before you can resume normal activities after a medium or deep peel and even after this time your skin may still be quite red.
During treatment, most patients feel a warm to somewhat hot sensation that finishes about five to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. Cool compresses may be applied to help ease this stinging. In about 1-10 weeks, your new skin will be evident and shortly wound will heal sufficiently to return to your normal regular activities. It is advised to avoid sun contact unless you are suitably protected.
