Chin Implant
Chin implant surgery (scientifically also known as mentoplasty) is a kind of cosmetic surgery in which the patient's chin is reduced or enlarged as is deemed necessary to get better the appearance of the face. Augmentation of the chin is also known as genioplasty. Chin malformations are the most common anomaly of the facial bones. Chin implant surgery is used to correct microgenia (i.e., re-formation of the chin). The surgical procedure is used to create the chin more prominent, so that it will be more balanced and more attractive related to the nose and lips. Surgery not only offers a harmonic appearance of face but it creates a better proportion between the chin and the cheeks to enhance your overall character. Ultimately this surgery gives the chin a more mannish or feminine look, according to the standards of proportion and harmony prescribed for each sex. More often cheek implants are intended for reconstructive or rejuvenation.
Chin implant surgery can be used for either cosmetic or reconstructive improvement of the jaw line. Procedure is performed on an outpatient basis where general anesthesia is used. Surgeon makes incision inside the mouth, along the lower lip, or it is made in the skin just beneath the chin. Surgeon then makes a pocket over the front of jawbone. A chin implant, specially selected to be the correct size and shape to give desired results, is inserted into the pocket. If the cut is made inside the mouth, it is closed with sutures (stitches) that later dissolve. If the cut is made under the chin, detachable sutures are used. At the end of the surgery, the chin is often striped to minimize swelling.
The chin augmentation procedure usually takes 1-2 hours. Sutures inside the mouth are disbanded after about 10-11 days. Patients can experience some swelling and discoloration for some period after the mentoplasty operation, but this usually ends within 10-15 days. Patients can return back to their normal routing work within a week. It is advised to avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks after the surgery, but exercise can be resumed in about three weeks. Some facial activities, such as talking and smiling, may be difficult for several days; however surgery offers a high satisfactory result at the end of prescribed time.
