The arthritic joint is uncovered, and the remaining cartilage is removed without affecting the wide area of bone. Through the procedure, the head of the femur bone is smoothed out and a durable resurfacing material such as high carbide cobalt chrome is used to the injured area. To allow a perfect fit & strengthened the joint between newly femur head and the hip joint, the hip socket is also reshaped. As the joint reconnects, the bone material around the area begins to grow and fuses together in a natural way. To ensure that the new head component will remain solid and in place, bone cement is also applied.
Patient usually returns to home from the hospital after 4 to 6 days. Some pain control techniques are used during post operative period. After a few months some physiotherapy techniques are advised to patient depending on the condition of joint and muscles after the operation. It helps the new bone growth and strengthens the muscles around the hip, but it must be done leisurely. Recovery period may take some time however most people can expect a full return to strength within 6 months. Some exercises such as swimming, and walking are the best activities to recover the hip joint, but high force sports and exhausting activities are restricted for initial few months.
